PreWritng
Our class is taking a trip to a local farm. We chose a farm because our community is mostly made up of farmland. We also chose a farm because that is how most of our community makes money. We think our farms are unique because most places have grain farms but we have animal farms as well as grain farms. We will be describing a pig farm for our Through Our Eyes project.

Students ride a haywagon to the pig farm
October 14, 1996
Today our class went to Nathan Hudson's pig farm in Laurel, Delaware
for a wonderful writing experience.
First we got off of the bus and onto a wagon for a hayride through
the farm and back to the area where the pigs are kept. This 5,000
acre farm can have as many as 22,000 pigs at one time. We learned a lot
about pig farming and a lot about the environmental issues associated with the
farm. We learned that all farmers in Delaware are required to have an
environmental plan to lesson the impact of the farm on the immediate
environment and the Chesapeake Bay. We sat on bales of hay and
used clipboards to do our prewriting. We described what we saw,
listing adjectives, verbs, and nouns.
This is a list of descriptive words that best describe the
farm.
Nouns: hogs, large pens, electric wire, feeders, irrigation, corn & husks, chickweed,
pig houses
Verbs: decomposing, growing, spraying, waving, zapping, smelling, chirping, clanging
Adjectives: dead, yellowish-brown, rough, fuzzy, pink-brown-black-spotted,
