Letter of Introduction

Hello world!!! We are 7th grade students at Davisville Middle School in North Kingstown, Rhode Island USA. We are the smallest state in our union with the longest name (The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations). We are sometimes called "the biggest little state in the union". North Kingstown is a small coastal town with a population of 26,000. We are located at 41N and 71W. Our eastern border is Narragansett Bay. We are a suburb of Rhode Island's biggest city and capital, Providence. Because of our closeness to the water and the importance of the bay to our community, Rhode Island is nicknamed "the ocean state". Inside our town, North Kingstown, are Quonset Point and Wickford. Quonset Point is a nearly abandoned Naval Installation used during World War II. Wickford is an old (old for the USA) village with buildings dating back to the 1700's. In the summer it is warm and sometimes hot (between 63 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit is the average but it occasionally gets as hot as 98); during the winter is cold (19-37 degrees Fahrenheit is the average, but it can drop to -10) We usually get a lot of snow. Last winter we had a whopping 107 inches, a record for Rhode Island. We have luckily finished hurricane season without a hurricane, and are now experiencing the foliage of fall. In Rhode Island has we have 180 days of school, fewer than many countries of the world. School is six and a half hours a day, five days a week with about a ten week vacation in summer (half of June , all of July, all of August , and a few days in September. We also have an occasional day off and a winter and spring vacation as well as time off at Christmas. Even with these vacations school is still our first priority. Our school has about 600 students in grades 6-8 with two groups of 100 students in each grade. Each group of students is called a team. We are members of Team A. Our school offers a variety of sports, clubs, and a literary magazine to which students can submit their work. We watch CNN Newsroom daily so we can keep ourselves informed. We also keep updated by being connected to the internet. Our internet address is http://ride.ri.net/schools/North_Kingstown/DMS/DMS.html Our many hobbies include soccer, basketball, baseball, hockey, drawing and dirt biking. We have some of the best dirt biking trails in the world in our community! Being close to the water we also enjoy many water sports such as swimming, water skiing and fishing. Good-bye from Rhode Island. We are looking forward to participating in Through Our Eyes! The kids from Team A Davisville Middle School North Kingstown, RI Return to Participating Schools
