Letter of Introduction
Hello to all the participants of "Through Our Eyes" from the Maple Ridge
"Ridge Runners" of Northern Michigan. We are the 5th Grade class of Mr
Meharg at Maple Ridge School in Alpena County Michigan
Maple Ridge School is in Maple Ridge Township. The township is 54 square
miles with a population just under 2000. Much of the township is forest
land. The Thunder Bay River flows through the township on its way to Lake
Huron. The city of Alpena is 15 miles away at the mouth of the river. The
city has a population of 18,000 and is located on the shore of Lake Huron at
the 45th parallel halfway between the equator and the North Pole.
Students from kindergarden to 6th grade attend Maple Ridge School. The 5th
grade has 18 students(9 boys and 9 girls) plus a "travel buddy" from
Australia. Sports are very popular. The school has two girls basketball
teams (we won our first game Sat 35-10), three boys teams as well as a girls
softball team. Many students also play on soccer,football and hockey teams.
Maple Ridge is a "Winter Water Wonderland". Fishing, hunting and skiing are
enjoyed by many in our area. There is a lot of wildlife by the school
including deer and turkeys. The school has a 20 acre nature area with a
nature trail and a pond.
You may have seen Maple Ridge on TV or at the movies. Tim was stranded at
our airport in the Christmas "Tool Time". Diehard 2 was filmed at that same
airport in Maple Ridge and the true story "Not Without My Daughter" begins here.
We are very excited about "Through Our Eyes" and are looking forward to
reading about all the other schools!
