Mt. Davidson, San Francisco, California
We are from Miraloma School which is located in one of the most
hilly cities in the country - San Francisco, California. Our school,
Miraloma, is a Spanish saying for "look at the mountain". This is
interesting because the school is built at the foot of a mountain - Mt.
Davidson.
In October of this year our class of twenty eight fifth graders went
to climb Mt. Davidson with our clipboards, paper and pencils. Of course, it
wasn't the first time for most of us to go there but we wanted to get a
better feel of the mountain by actually going there. This was so our
writing would be more authentic.
It was a windy October day when we went to Mt. Davidson which is
only a five minute walk from our school. At the foot of the mountain we
observed trees, bushes, wild flowers, berries as well as spiders and poison
oak. It is a very natural place because there is little if any human
changes made to the place. On the top of this mountain is a gigantic cross
that can be seen from many places all over the city because it is this
mountain that is the highest part of the city.
Fortunately or unfortunately it began to rain less than ten minutes
after we got there. The acorns and pine needles became slippery, the
butterflies were gone and we and our clipboards and note paper were soon
dripping wet. Mt. Davidson is never very crowded with humans but the
raccoons, squirrels and butterflies love it and so do we.
