Huntington Beach Pier

Through Our Eyes

Our field trip to Huntington Beach Pier in Huntington Beach, California, USA was fun. Huntington Beach is located on the shore of the Pacific Ocean in Northwestern Orange County. It is approximately 10 miles from Garden Grove, where we live. Los Angeles is 35 miles north of Huntington Beach. Home to the US Open Surfing Championship and the OP surfing contest, Huntington Beach is rated the "most heavily surfed beach on the West Coast" by Surfer's Almanac.

The weather was marvelous. Even though it is snowing in some parts of the United States we had 80 degree F. weather in November. When we walked out onto the pier, which is the longest municipal pier in the United States, we felt the sea breeze and we smelled the ocean smell.

We observed numerous surfers surfing on high waves while we were on the pier. Others were boogie boarding on smaller waves, although some were waiting for a good wave to arrive. Seagulls flew around the pier scavenging for food. We saw men and boys fishing on the pier, but we didn't see any women. We encountered a man that almost caught a fish, but the fish escaped.

After walking the pier we were starving and thirsty. Luckily, Huntington Beach, like most beach cities has fast food restaurants. We chose Burger King to enjoy our feast of cheeseburgers, french fries and cokes. We all wanted to stay longer and go in the water, but we did not have enough time because we had to catch the bus to go back to school.

We walked back to the bus stop along the water hoping the waves would splash on us .We found seashells while we were walking. They were partially buried in the gooey, wet sand. One of the seashells looked like a shoe. We also saw surfers rinsing off their wetsuits after surfing. Before boarding the bus we emptied the sand we had collected in our shoes. We feel lucky to live close to Huntington Beach and be able to go there - and it also free.
