The Red Deer River

The Red Deer River has many different attractions. The river runs through most of central Alberta. It is usually fast-flowing. In the spring it rises because of the clear water run off. The Red Deer River is very peaceful. The Red Deer river is full of spruce trees, cottonwood trees, and lush green grass. The river is a spawning ground for many different kinds of fish. Other animals that live near the Red Deer River are beavers, muskrats, coyotes, deer, moose, porcupines, fish, birds, squirrels, gophers, badgers, skunks, rabbits, and many more! It provides a rich habitat for many types of creatures. The river has its own unique characteristics as well. The banks are like highways of cement. Some of the banks are tall and smooth, but others are short and rocky. There are many trees along the banks shore which give it a very country look. Most of the rivers water comes from the mountains where it originattes tributaries to the Red Deer river include creeks, ponds, and other small rivers. The beutiful scenery along the riverside creates a spectacular view. The crystal clear waters hold many fish such as trout and pike. In autumn, the colours form a breathtaking carpet of red, yellow and orange which crunches underfoot when you walk on it. Canoeing, kayaking, boating and fishing are common in the summer. Swimming is not common or recommended but is still done by some people. In the winter activities such as skidooing and skating are popular. We are proud of our Red Deer river and hope to keep it clean and prosperous for the generations to come.
