Through Our Eyes - Stadium High School

Stadium High School is a unique landmark and school. It is located in downtown Tacoma, WA on Stadium Way, and overlooks Commencement Bay. The view from almost every window is spectacular. Students look north over the bluff at the bay, west at Stadium Bowl that drops way down over a hundred feet below the school, east toward downtown, and south past apartments to a beautiful forested park. People's first reaction is, "Oh my gosh! It's huge!" They are surprised and even intimidated by its looks. Some have even thought it was a cathedral, and others thought it was weird. In the early 1900's, Stadium High School was built to be a hotel for railroad people. It was even visited by Babe Ruth. Due to a fire it was never finished. It was auctioned off and the school district bought it. The gulch next to it was turned into a sports stadium.
Stadium looks like a huge ancient castle built on a high bluff overlooking the bay. Stadium Bowl drops deep into a gulch making Stadium appear huge and reaching into the sky. Several spires extend upward from the roof. Since Stadium is near downtown Tacoma, it is surrounded on the other sides by towering apartment buildings, houses, and a large park. When you walk to the entrance you see lots of bricks with people's name that gave money to the school. Under the brick entrance is a new gleamming swimming pool. There was nowhere else to build it. Many of our older brothers, sisters, and friends had a lot to say about Stadium High School. They feel that it is a very good school academically. They thought it was a great setting for learning. It's a really big and cool school. We are proud to be a part of it. How do we feel about going to Stadium next year? We think Stadium will be an excellent learning experience and are excited about going there. It has good sports programs and great teachers. A lot of kids from all over Tacoma choose to go there. Some of us are a little scared, but it will turn out fine.
