Through Our Eyes: Letchworth State Park
The Grand Canyon of the East
Letchworth--The Beginning

Letchworth: jagged, pale gray, and pointed; covered with moss, cobalt, dark green, rushing and covered with foam, deep browns, coarse and rough; framed with the changing leaves...ROCKS, WATER, TREES.

Letchworth is a very famous park. It has very big and forceful waterfalls: the upper, the middle, and the lower falls. The lower falls goes the farthest down even though it is called the lower falls. It has very big jagged rocks that could kill a man if he fell over. It is a very big place, as big as a small town, and very wet too. It looks like a giant stepped in it to make it. Under an old gray bridge that goes between Cathedral and Table Rock, there is a flume, which means the place where the river narrows.

Cathedral Rock is a very famous rock which is directly across a shale cliff near the flume. It is a place were nature and human environment combine. It is in the hands of nature, but it is just the way humans like it. It is a brownish beige, and is a mound of rock caused by the water. It is as natural as can be. It is where animals sometimes perch and nest. It is a truly magical place.

Table Rock is one of the neatest places we have ever been to. It was formed by the waves of water hitting it and making ripples in the surface, when it was under water in the Devonian period.

Falls and Leaves and Leaves and Fall

The trees of Letchworth are like blazing fires of yellow, orange and red. The view from the dam is amazing, looking down at all those trees and rocks. The big shale wall there is gray and rusty red. The ground is mushy and very sticky. It is very high up. The rocks are very smooth and easy to break. The rock walls are so tall that they make you feel like an ant looking up at a stone. When you walk into Letchworth you cannot see the sky, because it is covered with beautiful autumn trees. The falls brought out the color of the red, yellow, purple, green, and brown leaves that were on the trees, in the air, and on the ground. They look like a young child's scribble on a piece of paper. The falls are misty and filter the bright colors of the autumn trees.

Sparkling Spray

The river is a raging fury of water. At Letchworth the river water is a murky green and blue. The muddy, brown river winds through the gorge like a snake. The water is a murky, blue-green. It has lots of scum and leaves in it. The water going down the Lower Falls looks clear and smooth, yet it is going down sharp jagged rocks and when it hits the river it makes a lot of white mist. The flumes are thin and then thick.

Misty Breezy

Letchworth's sky is a gray, cold color. The air is misty and cool. Everything seems to just stop when you walk down the stone steps sloshing through the mud. The only sounds you hear are the rushing of the water and the faint peep or call of a bird. Everything you touch is damp or algae covered. If you look very closely at the cliffs you can pick out all the colors in the rainbow. The falls are huge giants washing their hands. The air is crisp and cool. It smells like a warm winter day. The smell of water is like the smell of an ocean. The air is so refreshing that it felt like you were just out of the shower dressed in a wonderful cool breeze.

Letchworth: A Poem

The trees were showing off for the last time.
Golden, bright red and green.
The clouds sang:
"Look at me, Sun, look at me!'
but the sun paid no heed,
and looked at the forest
full of splendor and glory,
and the aqua green river
running in between it.
Why is the river crying?
Is it crying for joy or for sadness? I wonder.
