1. He was orphaned at an early age and he went to sea as a cabin boy at the age of 13, on a ship bound for China.

2. He was at times, a blacksmith, a carpenter, a cook, a barber, a tailor, an interpreter, and a dog trainer.

3. He helped chart the jungles of Nicaragua.

4. Over a 4 year period he sailed to China, Japan, Manila, North Africa, France, and through the Black Sea to Southern Russia.

5. The ship

was visited by President Roosevelt at Oyster Bay on Long Island Sound.

6. Many of his meals were pemmican, biscuits, and tea, and many members of the expedition died of piblokto.

7. In 1895 they brought ""The Woman"", and ""The Dog"", to the United States. ""The Tent"", which weighed at least 35 tons, was retrieved in 1897, and now reposes in the American Museum of Natural History in New York.

8. He wrote his autobiography in 1911 and later earned a master's degree from Howard University.

9.  His honors include a personal salute by President Harry S. Truman, the Congressional Medal of Honor, and a reception at the White House by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.  He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery."
