Hunt For Famous Explorers Class Introductions

Narragansett Elementary
Greetings from the Ocean State:
Our 4th grade class at Narragansett Elementary School has 24
students with one teacher, Elaine Stedman. In our town we have one
elementary school with 798 students in grades K-4, a middle school with
grades5-8, and a high school with grades9-12. The three schools are all
within a mile of each other. In our class we have been studying Weather
and Explorers. We have been online following the Trans-Asia Expedition,
which is recreating Marco Polo's Voyage to China.
Rhode Island ,one of the New England states, is the smallest state
in the USA. It is 48 miles from north to south and 37 miles from east to
west with an area of 1,214 square miles. RI, one of the original 13
Colonies, was settled by religious refugees. It is the site of the first
Baptist church, the first Jewish synagogue and one of the first Quaker
meetinghouses.
RI is the second most densely populated state ,with our most
important industries being, health care, tourism and jewelry manufacturing.
Our forty miles of ocean coastline bring many tourists to our beaches in
the summer. Our school is less than one mile from the Atlantic Ocean.
Because of our proximity to the ocean we have a mild climate. Our average
temperature in the winter is 30.degrees F and in the summer our average
temp is 70 degreesF. We usually have about 44 inches of precipitation but
last winter we had about 100 inches of snow.
We are looking forward to participating in this Explorer Contest
and hope there are schools that would enjoy corresponding with us.
Kristvallabrunn School
This is where we live,
Kristvallabrunn is a village with 300 citizens. We have a small store and
our school
is not very big, only 60 children from grade 1-6. In Kristvallabrunn we
live in houses not flats.
We´ve got Swedens most beautiful countryroad ( so they say ).We are
surrounded by forests
with mushrooms, firs, pine trees, oaks, birches, deers, elks, foxes and a
lot of other things.
Some years ago we had a chickenslaughtery but it moved and the building has
been empty and
ugly for a long time. Now a man has started to renovate it and will sell
our pure spring water to Europe. A great improvement we must say. We also
have a few sawmills, a hairdresser and a company that engrave in crystal.
Swedens famous glassfactorys Orrefors and Kosta is not far from here, only
20 minutes by car. In our class grade 5 and 6 we have a lot of pets. We
love animals all of us. Some of us live on farms and half of us have horses
at home. It's very beautiful here and we are very proud of our school and
our village.
Kalmar is quite close to us only 25 kilometers away. Now spring is here
with springflowers like hepatica, wood anemone and coltsfoot. The nighs are
still cold with temperatures below zero. We are working with explorers and
inventors so this work suits us well. We hope the clues won't be too
difficult for us.
So good luck all of you from Kristvallabrunnsschool
Maine West High School
We are sophomores at Maine West High School in Des Plaines, a suburb of
Chicago, the hometown of the 1996 champion Chicago Bulls. Our school is a
"School of Excellence". It consists of many types of people, African
Americans, hispanics, orientals, whites, and Indians (from India).
We live near Six Flags Great America, an amusement park, and Rosemont
Horizon where a lot of famous celebrities and bands perform. Chicago is also
known for pizza, hot dogs, Picasso's art, and Frank Lloyd Wright architecture.
It got so cold here that during finals week we had to take a day off. The
wind-chill factor went down to 55 degrees below zero! Chicago is known as
"The Windy City" (That's not always because of the weather, though!)
Good luck playing this game. Let the best school win!

Maywood Center
We are a class of two students. We are homeschoolers. one of us is in 9
grade and the other is in 6 grade. We think Explorers will be fun.
Our school is Maywood Center, south of Sea-Tac International Airport. Next
year we will move to a new building called Manhatten. We love Maywood Center
bacause it is the best school on the face on the planet Earth.
We live in Seattle, Washington, USA. We live close to puget Sound. Our
hometown has a baseball team called the Seattle Mariners, who tied for third
place in the playoffs two years ago and our city is also home to the Space
Needle.

Noorman Family Home Schoolers
We are the Noorman Family Home Schoolers from Kentwood, a suburb of
Grand Rapids, Michigan.
We have been homeschooling for four years. Macia (sixth grade) will
be our participant (assisted by her sisters Megan-8 and Marla-6) Jeanne
(mom) is our teacher. We are currently studying the geography, history and cultures of the
world. So, this explorers game fits well in our Unit Study.
It is very cold here in the winter. We had 96 inches of snow
this winter! Even though the windchill hit 60 degrees below zero this
winter, school was never cancelled. Mom said the weather didn't keep us
from getting to school
safely!

Lone Rock School Introduction
We are the fifth grade class at Lone Rock Elementary School. Lone Rock is a
small country school about 10 miles northeast of Stevensville, Montana. We
are a k-6 school and have about 200 students.
The fifth grade class is very interested in sports, computers and in
learning new things. Many students participate in baseball, basketball, and
soccer.
Our school is located in the Bitterroot Valley. When we look ou the windows
we see the Sapphires Mountains to the east and the Bitterroot Mountains to
the west. Montana is a great place to live. It is not very populated and
offers many varied ourdoor activities allyear long. Our weather varies
greatly. This year we have had an extemely long and snowy winter. We are
now waiting for the flooding to begin when the snow in the mountains starts
melting. In Montana you need to be prepared for all types of weather at all
times.
Lone Rock's Fifth Grade
Tanja School
Tanja is a small rather isolated community located on the far south coast
of New South Wales, Australia. In your atlas you might not find Tanja so
try to locate our neighbouring towns of Tathra, Bega or Eden.
Tanja is a peaceful place surrounded by beautiful farmland, beaches,
national parks and state forests. It is the best time of year at the
moment. Autumn (Americans would call it "Fall") is very mild. The water is
still warm for swimming and the nights are cool. Temperatures lately have
been 18 - 22 degrees C.
We have kangaroos, wallabies, possums, parrots, wombats, echidnas eagles,
dolphins and whales in our district. Tanja has no Post Office or shops. The
only building other than the school and housing is the Tanja Hall, an old
wooden building.
There are 30 students in our whole school covering grades Kindergarten and
Years 1 to 6. (A "primary" school here is what Americans would call an
"elementary" school.) We have two full-time teachers.
We hope everyone on the Internet enjoys the Explorers game.
Yours faithfully
the kids from Tanja
Cherry Hill Middle School
We are a sixth grade social studies class at Cherry Hill Middle
School in Elkton, Maryland (USA). This year our class is in a brand
new portable classroom because our school is home to the seventh graders
from Elkton Middle School while their school undergoes renovations.
Elkton, Maryland (USA) is located in Cecil County. The county
is considered to be a rural area. We are very near to the Chesapeake
Bay. If you look on a map we are located in the very upper right corner
of Maryland (on the east coast of the United States).
Our school has 690 students. Our school's colors are green and
white. The mascot for our school is the Cherry Hill cougar.
Let the exploring begin
Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School
Our grade five class makes learning and living interesting for our
teacher, Mrs. P. Firstly, we all try to get along as well as we
possibly can. We have worked hard at treating others the way we want to
be treated ourselves, so we usually get to pick our own groups. As
well, we try to make every day new and exciting. We are enthusiastic
and make an honest effort at being organised and getting our work done,
although we sometimes come up with a good excuse for why our homework
isn't done.
Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School is somewhat unique. One feature is that we
are a grade 1 to 12 school. This means that, as elementary students, we
get help from older students who have more experience. It also means
that we don't have to change schools and can stay with our friends.
Another aspect of our school is that we are outside of the city on 100
acres of land that looks out onto the Rocky Mountains. We have a pond
for canoeing, woods to play in, a ravine to cross-country run and ski
through, a big creative playground and three fields for sports. We like
all these activities and being away from the noise and pollution of the
city.
Although there is some pollution, Calgary, Alberta, Canada is still a
great place to live. Many of us ski in the winter, because we are so
close to the mountains of Banff National Park. In the summer, we can
hike. Calgary is also famous for its Stampede in July. For ten days,
everyone dresses western and people from all over the world come to
enjoy the Exhibition, Rodeo, Chuckwagon Races and Grandstand Show.
