Letters to Italy from Israel

17/1/97

Hello Teresa and Giampaolo,

We hope you had a nice Chistmas holiday. I have included files which I hope you have suceeded to read and am adding a message from Ella Tuvia to Alessandro Verlato:

Hi Alessandro,

First I want to say that my project is only about Italy and not about Switzerland too.

I want to ask you a few questions, first personal then geographic questions.

Tell me, do you live near Lago Magiorre? Because I think this is a beautiful place. And also, I think you're very lucky to live near Venice. This is on of the most beautiful and special places I ever saw. And another thing, I was glad to hear that you're a soccer fan. I just love Italian soccer and Milan is my favourite team. What's yours? And now for the geographic part.

Please give me some information on the Italian countryside (about the mountains, rivers, seas) I think you live near a big river, don't you? Where does it start? How long? Can you swim in it ? And do you have big mountains and maybe volcanoes?

Thanks and goodbye

Ella

To Diego Cappati,

Hello, this is Aviad Sharabani, from Israel. I'm 13 years old and I live in a kibbutz. kibbutz is like a small village in the country. We have cows, we grow lemons, oranges and grapefruits and we have many fish-ponds. We also have a bif factory. It makes all kinds of things. Do you know we make the dogs (little metal statues) on the front of the big MACK trucks? We also make parts for all kinds of cars.

I play basketball and I really like this sport. Do you watch the NBA from the USA? Do you know of the (Chicago) Bulls? I really like them! You asked me if I listen to Italian singers . . but sorry I don't know any. I do watch and listen to music on MTV. I like English songs and also Hebrew songs. Please tell me about your life in Italy. What is your village like? What sort of factories do you have there? Is your village famous for something? What else do you do in your free time? Bye for now and a Happy New Year

Aviad

TO MATTEO ORI:

Hi Matteo. How are you?

About your question, kibbutz is a place like a village which is uniqueness to Israel. In the kibbutz everybody have to share everything. About my project - I'm writing about Switzerland so maybe you can't help me, but I hope that you can be my pen pal. I want to ask you how old you are? O.k, that's it, so write me as soon as possible. Bye, Bye,

MICHAL (Soriano)

P.S. MERRY CHRISTMAS

To Alice Minghini

What's up? (How are you?) First I'll answer the questions you ask me about. So I'll first tell you what is "Kibbutz". Kibbutz in English it's ingathering but the meaning of that in Hebrew is sharing. Kibbutz is like a small village but... in kibbutz we have common dining-room (that's a place were we eat. It's mean we eat together all the people of the kibbutz in the same place) & we laund all of our clothes in the same place (theres a big machines) & more some sharing stuff... the kibutzs have bean made in the past because the first settlers that come to settle think that it's the best way to live then because they have not al lot of stuff & if they are sharing so everybody got the same things & all what they need they have.In the past the kibbutz was more sharing but now we having changes because the kibbutz of the past is not good for today times. So we having changes all the time & now for example the budget is change from one to one (till now everybody get the same budget) so this is less or more the kibbutz.

The Jewish holiday Hanukah is a holiday that we celibrate the winning of the Jewish on the Greeks (more than 2000 years ago !) & it's just a little before Christmas.

In the kibbutz we have a house for the kids & in that house the kids living between 14:00 - 16:00 o'clock every day so in the holidays we have trips for all of the childrens in the kibbutz so this is how I'm spent my time. I don't know if I'm goo d at school I have average of something like: 93-95 so you will descide if I'm good or not. I don't celibrate Christmas so I don't do nothing.

What are you doing in your free time? I'm going to activities like karate, volley-ball & piano in karate it's my 7th year & I've take in Hanuka the 3rd place in my club champion (last year I was the second) in volley-ball it's my first year & in piano it's my 3 year what kind of music do you like? What is your birthday date? My date of birthday is: 15.08.83 tell me a bout your city.

What kind of t.v shows do you like? I like X-Files most & simpson family I don't like soap opera it's boring(!!!) tell me a bout your self & what you like to do.

Bye Bye Yonatan Nassau

P.s. it's take me so much time to write you back because I don't have time (I have evry day activities so do you accept my apology?

See ya! Your mail friend Yonatan Nassau

To viola bruni from asaf segal

Hi Viola , it's me again (actually it's me for the first time) . I'm 1.65 m' and I have a brown short-long hair (it's not to long and it's not to short) , and brown eyes. We went to Disneyland world and went all the way up to the Empire State Building (the 3rd high building in the world ), whale watch in Boston and stuff.

Again like you I hate school !!

so if you not in a deep sleep by now and you read it all I'm finish my life story here.

WRITE BACK SOON
Merry Christmas

LOVE ASAF SEGALL

Asaf - from Peter

This is a very good introduction. You have written an interesting and funny letter.

Please remember to set the LTR paragraph to Left so I don't have to change from Hebrew to English all the time.

I don't think you will get a reply till about mid January as they have 3 weeks holiday for Christmas and New Year in Europe.

You have plenty of time to prepare your next LONG letter. Ask about life in the town (Porto Maggiore) - it's about half the size of Beit Shean, I think. You can write about the kibbutz - how you live, about where you live (close to the Jordan border); tell them about Tu B'Shvat, Purim; something about the climate in the summer........... also please ask about their villages and towns, about Christmas and New Year.

To Alessandro Verlato Porto Maggiore, Italy

Thanks a lot for the information about the geography of Italy! I have some other requests to you. But first I want to say - Congratulations for winning over England in the soccer game! I hope your team will keep winning until it will take the World Cup

And now to Geography; I have to write a chapter in my Project about something that I choose myself. Can you give me some information about the population of Italy? Where do they live, the big cities, the areas of Italy, what are the main industries? If you can, please write a few words about Italy specialises in - maybe about your national foods, about tourism and something about farming; any other ideas will be very welcome. I'd be very happy if you could find time to write back soon as I have to get the project in soon.

What do you want to know about our village (kibbutz)?

Thanks very much

GoodBye

Ella
