How people live in Europe and the Middle East
We have corrected most of the spelling mistakes but have not changed the style. We've added explanations where necessary about local Israeli/Jewish things. Please note: Hebrew is written from right to left - there are no vowels as such and the construction of the language compared to a Latin language causes lifelong confusion - not just with our pupils !
We have included only six letters at this stage - so as not to make this message too long - though there are about 50 pupils "waiting in the wings" who would like to correspond with their "IMAGINARY PEOPLE" from other places in Europe! (Holland, Switzerland, other Scandinavian countries, Italy, France, Germany, etc). Again, please see the Project details for more information. The list of Imaginary People is flexible - all ideas welcome - but in Europe - you of course can ask about "I.P's" in Israel or the Middle East!
Here are the letters:

Dear Abbe, I was very exciting when I get your letter. I couldn't read it because of my exciting!
Our teacher has told us that only girls got a letter and that I am one of them. She told us to write about what I like and what I don't. So here it is!
I like my cat - she is called Tsila! She is black and white and she is very human - for example, when she wants to eat something she goes straight to the fridgidaire ar when she wants to go out she stand next to the door!
I like my friend Lital - she is also writing to someone from your class, I think; we are very good friends.
I like all my family (of course). My sister. Michal could some time go on line - I'd like that too.
But I don't like someone who is nice to me - it makes me nervous; so don't do it ! - (just kidding !!!)

Yours for always

I was very cheerful when I got your letter so fast. I'm living at Kibbutz Kfar Ruppin as you .know. We are very close to the Kingdom of Jordan border, almost on the River Jordan. If you want to find me on the map, look in the North East part of Israel; look for the town of Beit Shean (Beisan?) - it is where King Saul and Johnathan were killed after the Israelites lost on Mount Gilboa to the Philistines (See the Bible in Samuel I, Verses 8-31) . Anyway, when you find the small town of Beit Shean you have to LOOK DOWN into our valley - we are more than 200 metres below Sea Level - almost as much as Sodom and Gemorrah.
We are good friends with our neighbours Jordan but sad to say we have many enemies - near to our kibbutz is the Bridge of Peace which crossed the river - only 2 years ago there was no way we could meet our neighbours, but we are still a long way from real peace.
A few facts about our kibbutz: (added by Peter)
Our grandfathers settled here in 1936 - most of them came from Germany and Austria, escaping from the Nazis. Later a group came from Czechoslovakia. We grow field crops such as cotton wheat, corn and tomatoes, we have an orchard with mangoes and grapefruit we have a freshwater fish farm - and we also grow tropical fish. Other things we have are a dairy, chickens and ready-made grass lawns! Our factories make plastic profiles and we have tourists who come to see the large number of birds migrating through our valley .
That should keep yopu busy
Write soon
Yula (Yael Konra)
I'm sorry that I didn't write for a long time, I hope that's all right! Say hello to A.J. for me and I hope that he could write to me sometimes. Don't be concerned from your English, because from what I read in your letter it was very good.
I heard that you have a farm. Which animal do you like the most? I like mostly cats, and I love to see horses, but I am afraid to ride on them. If you read my first letter to A.J. you could know that I am dancing (a lot!) But I'm considering to join the basketball team, what do you think?
Anyway, I cut my hair last week in about 15cm. (how dramatic !) But nobody seem to notice and I was very angry! Could you send me a picture of you? My address is Lital Gabbai, care of Peter Freedman, Kibbutz Neve Eitan, POB 10840, Israel I will try and send one of mine.
Bye
Lital

Hi ABBE,(in Norway)

Hello! My name is Ella Tuvia, and I'm a 13 years old girl and I live in Kibbutz Hamadia, israel. I guess you know that I'm working on a project about Europe as a part of my geographic lessons in school and I chose to do it about your country, Switzerland. I hope you'll help me with it and we'll get to be friends. In this letter, I won't ask you many questions about Switzerland, because I didn't get instuctions from my teacher yet. So look t this letter as a meeting letter.
As I said, I'm 13 years old - I have 3 sisters and parents and l live in a kibbutz. The kibbutz is a special way of living which is unique to Israel. There are many kibbutzim all over the country, they are all very small - between 100 and 1000 people usually. In the kibbutz everybody is supposed to share everything - well, not everything! It may sound bad, but it isn't. The kibbutz is a nice pastoralic place. I like to draw, to read and write and also I'm a soccer fan. I would like you to tell me about yourself.
I visited in Switzerland with my family in the last summer. I think it is an incredible, beautiful country. Everything is so green and looks like it's taken from a legends book. But - you already know this....
Again, I want you to know that I am very glad to correspond with you, and I hope you'll help me
Goodbye, Ella
How are you? I'm sorry my letter comes so late, but what can I do?
I had a boy friend, but I left him because I didn't want a long friendship with him. Anyway, his name is Sagi and he was very funny - but that's life..... !
If you can, I would like you to send me your picture. I love puppies - can you send pictures of your pets also?
Well, I hope you haven't fallen asleep, because of my letter. Next time I will write about "How we live....." , and ask questions about Karjaa, your village in Finland. This is part of our Geography project; maybe you can ask about our village and school, also.
So - bye, bye and I hope you will answer me very soon !!!!!!!
