Country
Capitals is back for the second year. Many of us enjoyed this game last and
hope to see you all of you back again this year. This year's game is moderated
by Jeanne Noorman of Noorman Homeschool located in Kentwood, Michigan, USA.
Each site chooses a current country capital anywhere
in the world and develops 9 clues about that capital. ALL clues AND the capital
chosen are sent to the organizer of the game. Each Monday of the following 3
weeks, one set of 3 clues from each participating site will be posted on one
e-mail message to the KIDPROJ board. During each week clues are posted, each
participating site may ask ONE yes/no question of each site playing the game.
After the 3 weeks of clues, participating sites will have one week to try and
guess the country capital each site has chosen.
Only ONE guess is allowed. The week after the
guesses are sent in, a tally is posted of all participating sites and a winner
declared.
The primary objective for participants would be to
use the game to teach students to use the WWW as a reference in conjunction
with other reference materials. Basically, the game is a "how to find and
access" information. Deductive and inductive reasoning skills must also be
used in figuring out where to look for information based on clues given by
other sites. An increased interest in and knowledge of geography and history is
a secondary benefit of playing the game.
The project/game will run from October 27 to December
12. Total time involved will be 6 weeks with results being posted the 7th
week.
How many classes you involve, age of students, number
of available online computers, other reference materials available, and how
much class time you wish to devote to "research skills" will determine
how much class time you will use to play the game. This game is ideal for a 7
week "exploratory" type class in computers or telecommunications but
can be played by a single class with only one computer capable of going online.
All sites wishing to participate must register with
Jeanne Noorman at noorman@i2k.com. The registration information is at the
bottom of this message. 1200 GMT time Saturday of week 1 (November 8th) is the
deadline for sites wishing to register.
Monday, a list of all participating sites and e-mail
addresses will be posted to the KIDPROJ board as one message. Keep this list to
have the e-mail addresses of where to send your yes/no questions asked of each
site. Also during this week, all participating sites will choose their country
capital and create 9 interesting clues. All 9 clues and the capital chosen must
be sent noorman@i2k.com by no later than 1200 GMT Saturday of this week
(November 15) or they are disqualified. (However, clues and answers can be sent
earlier in the week if desired.)
Each Monday, 1 set of 3 clues from each playing site
will be posted to the KIDPROJ board as one transmission. During each of these
weeks, sites may ask ONE yes/no question regarding their capital. These
questions are to be sent DIRECTLY TO THE SITE and NOT to the organizer. During
these 3 weeks, students research clues trying to develop yes/no questions that
will lead them to the answer of each capital chosen by other sites playing the
game. ONE yes/no question may be asked of each site until 1200 GMT time
Saturday of each week clues come out. (A total of 3 yes/no questions will/can
be asked of each site but only one a week). Yes/no questions that arrive after
1200 GMT time Saturday of each week do not have to be answered. So don't wait
until the last minute to send out your questions! Sites MUST respond to each
yes/no question asked of them during this time for EVERYONE to fully benefit
from playing the game. Hitting the reply key and a simple "yes or no"
is all that is required when receiving a question from another site.
On Monday of this week, a list of all playing sites
(with no e-mail addresses) will be sent out by the organizer. Hit the reply key
and enter ONE guess next to each site for the identity of the capital you think
they have chosen. DO NOT SEND INDIVIDUAL GUESSES! All your guesses should be
submitted on this list and returned to noorman@i2k.com no later than 1200 GMT
Saturday of this week. Guesses not on the list or sent later than 1200 GMT
Saturday,(December 13) will not be counted.
The game is officially over and result tallies for
each site will be posted to the KIDPROJ board along with the identity of the
capital chosen by each site.
