Hunt For Country Capitals has moved to KidSpace.

Fall 1997

Participating Schools | School Introductions | First Clues | Second Clues | Third Clues | School Scores

Country Capitals is back for the second year. Many of us enjoyed this game last and hope to see you all of you back again this year. This year's game is moderated by Jeanne Noorman of Noorman Homeschool located in Kentwood, Michigan, USA.

Summary of game:

Each site chooses a current country capital anywhere in the world and develops 9 clues about that capital. ALL clues AND the capital chosen are sent to the organizer of the game. Each Monday of the following 3 weeks, one set of 3 clues from each participating site will be posted on one e-mail message to the KIDPROJ board. During each week clues are posted, each participating site may ask ONE yes/no question of each site playing the game. After the 3 weeks of clues, participating sites will have one week to try and guess the country capital each site has chosen.
Only ONE guess is allowed. The week after the guesses are sent in, a tally is posted of all participating sites and a winner declared.

Skills used and benefits:

The primary objective for participants would be to use the game to teach students to use the WWW as a reference in conjunction with other reference materials. Basically, the game is a "how to find and access" information. Deductive and inductive reasoning skills must also be used in figuring out where to look for information based on clues given by other sites. An increased interest in and knowledge of geography and history is a secondary benefit of playing the game.

Timeline:

The project/game will run from October 27 to December 12. Total time involved will be 6 weeks with results being posted the 7th week.

Class time involved:

How many classes you involve, age of students, number of available online computers, other reference materials available, and how much class time you wish to devote to "research skills" will determine how much class time you will use to play the game. This game is ideal for a 7 week "exploratory" type class in computers or telecommunications but can be played by a single class with only one computer capable of going online.

Week beginning Monday, October 27-Week 1

All sites wishing to participate must register with Jeanne Noorman at noorman@i2k.com. The registration information is at the bottom of this message. 1200 GMT time Saturday of week 1 (November 8th) is the deadline for sites wishing to register.

Week beginning Monday, November 10-Week 2

Monday, a list of all participating sites and e-mail addresses will be posted to the KIDPROJ board as one message. Keep this list to have the e-mail addresses of where to send your yes/no questions asked of each site. Also during this week, all participating sites will choose their country capital and create 9 interesting clues. All 9 clues and the capital chosen must be sent noorman@i2k.com by no later than 1200 GMT Saturday of this week (November 15) or they are disqualified. (However, clues and answers can be sent earlier in the week if desired.)

Weeks beginning on Mondays of November 17th, 24th, and December  1- Weeks 3,4 &5

Each Monday, 1 set of 3 clues from each playing site will be posted to the KIDPROJ board as one transmission. During each of these weeks, sites may ask ONE yes/no question regarding their capital.  These questions are to be sent DIRECTLY TO THE SITE and NOT to the organizer. During these 3 weeks, students research clues trying to develop yes/no questions that will lead them to the answer of each capital chosen by other sites playing the game. ONE yes/no question may be asked of each site until 1200 GMT time Saturday of each week clues come out. (A total of 3 yes/no questions will/can be asked of each site but only one a week). Yes/no questions that arrive after 1200 GMT time Saturday of each week do not have to be answered. So don't wait until the last minute to send out your questions! Sites MUST respond to each yes/no question asked of them during this time for EVERYONE to fully benefit from playing the game. Hitting the reply key and a simple "yes or no" is all that is required when receiving a question from another site.

Week beginning December 8th- Week 6

On Monday of this week, a list of all playing sites (with no e-mail addresses) will be sent out by the organizer. Hit the reply key and enter ONE guess next to each site for the identity of the capital you think they have chosen. DO NOT SEND INDIVIDUAL GUESSES! All your guesses should be submitted on this list and returned to noorman@i2k.com no later than 1200 GMT Saturday of this week. Guesses not on the list or sent later than 1200 GMT Saturday,(December 13) will not be counted.

Week beginning Monday, December 15th-Week 7

The game is officially over and result tallies for each site will be posted to the KIDPROJ board along with the identity of the capital chosen by each site.
