Book Title : Strange Matter - The Last One In
Authors : Engle & Barnes
Reviewer: Suresh Kumar (Age: 13)When I was browsing along the bookshelves the first thing that attracted me to this book was its computerized graphic image which was very captivating, so, I picked the book up, turned the book over, and read a short segment of it. It was a description of anxiety spreading through a girl when she found out that she was being hunted by something in the water in which she was in. Something which she could not resist because it was so much stronger than her. This segment if you had read would have kept you so excited that you would not have realized that all the excitement was caused because of the authors description of the girl’s feelings, her thoughts and gestures at that crucial time. Usually excitement comes to me when a building blasts in an explosion and the hero always escapes while the villain gets trapped in the building or when a high speed chase might be present in a busy highway when the hero whizzes pass the cars and the villain who might have been persuaing him and ends up in an accident. These are still interesting to me but I have benifited as now I have a wider variety of books to choose from when I next visit the library.
This book is mostly about a secret. A secret, which was, submerged deep in the murky depths of Lake Wataga for forty years after which it had returned to feed.
But up on top of a hill lives a grumpy rude old lady called Lady Gloucester. The oldest resident of the lake who had known this secret for all the years and kept it a secret until the monstrous creature emerged one day breaking the surface revealing itself to all those who lived there.Noticing this our three main characters Michelle, Erin and Billy respectively 13,14 and 11 decide to ask Lady Gloucester about it as she is the oldest resident and that there had been rumours about sightings by a few people who lived around the lake a long time ago . Learning the secret and feeling the need to put an end to it they try but fail in getting the adults co-operation hence deciding to tackle things themselves. They regret making a few moves but always find a solution to get out of their problems. Doing some research, monitoring the creatures moves and the way it reacts to things like light and fire gives them a better understanding of the monster. In the end they find themselves in the monster’s lair, realizing that they are set as live bait by the clever old woman who wants to capture the monster. But the story takes a twist when the monster reacts differently to the situation than expected giving our young heros’ more time to make their escape.
I usually read this book at night and what made me forget my sleep and keep reading on was the style in which the book was written. Every single chapter of this book ended with a mystery, which would be revealed only in the next chapter making me curious and urging me to go on. Furthermore the authors were very descriptive at times making the excitement of reading the book live-longer
This book and all the others in the series cost about 6.50. I hope that you have learned more about this book and those interested might like to borrow this book from the national library or buy it. The series also has a website at http://www.strangematter.com. You might be able to find more information there and also segments of the various books. Thank you.

Book Title :Animorphs-The Visitor
Author :K A Applegate
Reviewer : Suresh Kumar (Age:13 )
I came across this book when I last visited the Library. The cover had a picture of a girl changing into a cat. This immediately captured my eyes so I picked the book up, flipped through it and read a short segment of the book. It is about a girl who was changing into a cat. Instead of feeling smaller she described it as her feeling much stronger as though all her strength was complied in that small body. It also described her fear when a huge eagle appeared causing her to gain all her energy to pounce high above to attack the incoming trespasser.
After reading this segment I realised that the author had imagined herself in the position of the girl who is changing into a cat. The author had analysed her points, made up beautiful phrases and formed sentences systematically making it very exciting. So I borrowed the book, brought it home and began to read it.
The book revolves around Jake, Rachael, Marco, Cassie and Tobias five ordinary kids, well... they were ordinary kids until they met a dying Andalite warrior, Andalites are aliens who have the power to change into other creatures by acquiring the creatures DNA or blood strands, amazing isn’t it! Well, the Andalite gives this power to this group of teens and instructs them to use the power to defeat the Yeerks in their battle to save mankind. The yeerks are slug like creatures that squeeze into the brains of animals and take control of them unlike the andalites who make a sample of the original animal. The yeerks are ruled by Visser Three. Visser Three is the only yeerk that has succeeded in controlling an Andalite body, in the process gaining the power to morph. The story also involves Mr and Mrs. Chapman, both human controllers and their daughter Melissa Chapman.
In the last book the Animorphs invaded a yeerk base when Tobias got trapped in an eagle morph because he had remained in it for more than two hours causing him to lose the power to morph leaving him an eagle for life. In this book they decide to track down the human controller Chapman to find the new base. After thinking of many ways to find the truth they come across a picture of Melissa Chapman’s daughter and her pet. A tomcat.
With their new idea in mind they go after the cat and finally get hold of it, with their clothes torn and scratch marks on their skin. Rachael volunteers to acquire the cats DNA not just to find the yeerks hideout but also to check on her friend Melissa who had not been very friendly recently. She follows Chapman into the basement. Where Visser Three appears, not for real, but just as a hologram. He notices the cat Rachael and asks Chapman to kill her suspecting Rachael to be an Andalite, as he does not know that the Animorphs are actually humans. But than after seeing her acting just like a cat he decides to spare her. The next day the same happens and Rachael follows Chapman into the Basement. This time she hides under the table, she jerks when she hears a voice in her head and realises that Jake had morphed into a flea to accompany her. She is exposed when Chapman accidentally kicks her. She screams and Visser, now fully sure that she is an Andalite in a cat morph, orders Chapman to bring her to him. He also asks Chapman to bring Melissa, his daughter, to make her a controller.
Rachael struggles but gets put in a cage. Suddenly Mr Chapman starts to act weirdly like slapping himself as the human Chapman had started to take charge of the body but the yeerk who was eventually stronger regained control. Melissa comes down after this and asks help in a problem but her father ignores her. He didn’t take Melissa along to stuff a yeerk into her head, as he didn’t want the real Chapman to fight him again. She returns to her room sobbing. Rachael realises why Melissa had not been talking lately but she also knew that Melissa’s real father still loved her.
The next moment Rachael was at the construction site, it was almost two hours and time was running out but she dared not morph back to human cause if she had the Visser would have realised that the others were Humans too. The Visser arrived in a blade ship with a fighter ship to guard him. The moment he stepped out he was attacked by a huge tiger, Jake of course, who had managed to morph back to human and into the tiger just in time. Chapman dropped the cage and Rachael ran out. Visser started morphing into a gigantic beast, Jake escaped but Rachael was not quick enough the Visser almost caught her when Tobias swooped down and flew off with her while Cassie and Marco distracted the Visser in their hawk morphs and slowly made their escape.
