CHANDRA FRANCES
MARY HENDRY
ISBN 0192717537reviewed by Gaelle
I selected this superb book because I think everyone should read it. Chandra talks about life today for Indians. I learned new things about Indian culture. Chandra is an 11-year-old girl who marries a 16-year old boy. When she arrives at her husband's home, she is beaten by her family-in -law and then learns she is a widow and is blamed for her husband's death. Read on to know if she will escape or continue to suffer. Chandra won the Writer's Guild Award. I can understand why because after reading it you want to help them and it is very sad to know people of my age being beaten
MATILDA
ROALD DAHL
0140327592reviewed by Nathanael
Matilda is a prodigy. At the age of 4, she has already read all the books from her local library and even a few classics like 'Great Expectations'. But the problem is that her parents consider books a waste of time and that television is great. When she goes to school she finds out that the all the fun they could have learning is spoilt by Miss Trunchbull, a cruel, strong, bullying headmistress. However, her life is made bearable by her kind, sweet teacher Miss Honey whom she surprises with her incredible capacity to multiply large numbers and spell difficult words. Matilda discovers she has extraordinary powers of moving objects just by looking at them. Read this book and find out how she will use this power to avenge herself on the mighty Trunchbull. This great, marvellously funny book will make you laugh till you cry; The story is written in a descriptive and imaginative way and I am not the least surprised that this superb book won the Children's Book Award. Quentin Blake, the illustrator, did good drawings with a touch of humour in them. There is at least one illustration every 4 pages. It made me realise that some parents don't encourage their children to read. All children from 7 upwards MUST read this book. You would be really foolish to put it back on the library shelf.
