Hooked On Books

The best Reviews of the Week are now appearing!

DURATION:
One term January 11th-March 26th 1999

AIMS:
To encourage children to identify what makes a book appeal to them and be able to share this enthusiasm with members of their own classes and students worldwide using e-mail and the World Wide Web. To promote feedback and exchange of opinion by e-mail and encourage the children to extend their reading and experiment with new authors and genres.

OBJECTIVES

  • 1. To learn to analyse and discuss characteristics of a book.
  • 2. To write a creative and persuasive response to encourage others
  • 3. To read e-mail messages and respond to other people's comments.
  • 4. To read new authors and books recommended by their peers around the world.
  • Kids ReadTEACHING POINTS:
The aim is that the reviews should be the creative response of the child to the book they've read rather than an imitation of adult reviews. Work with the children by discussing what makes a good review and what to think about as they are reading. Encourage them to work in small groups or pairs composing a review in order to give themselves confidence to attempt one on their own. Below is a framework of suggestions rather than a rigid structure for each review.

    FOR STORY AND PICTURE BOOKS:
Hint at interesting aspects of the plot without revealing all. Why did you select this book? What was your favourite part and why? Are the characters and places described believably or in such a way as to capture your imagination and attention? Does the action move along quickly? Are the words used imaginative, challenging or easy to read? What do you think of the illustrations (if any)? Were there any parts which surprised you? Has it changed the way you think about a problem or view a character? Where does the story take place? How important is this? Would you like tp read any more books by the same author or in the same series? What would you tell your best friend about this book if you wanted to persuade them to read it?

    FOR INFORMATION BOOKS:
How is the information presented? Is it easy to find and follow? Is it easy to read and understand? What made you select this book and value it? Does the book help you to learn more about a subject? How does it do that? Has the book encoraged you to do anything e.g. Try a new hobby, join an organisation, think about problems in a new way, read more books on the same subject?

An alternative approach is illustrated below:

Danny Champion of the World by Roald Dahl. Who is Danny? Why does he live in a caravan? Where does his father disappear to so mysteriously at night? Why is Danny driving illegally alone at midnight? What is the connection between pheasants, paper hats and raisins? What makes Hazell foam at the mouth? What strange things are happening under the blankets of the baby's pram?

Read 'Danny Champion of the World' by Roald Dahl and discover for yourself. This is not a book to throw out of the window when it is raining.

    REVIEW RESPONSE:
Each review must contain the book's full title, author and ISBN, the child's creative response and persuasive message together with a recommendation as to what age group or type of person would enjoy it. Children would be encouraged to try some of the recommendations and comment informally to the reviewer by e-mail.

If you want to register please check out the registration details.
