BENNI THE BEAR

Shady Oaks Elementary School, Hurst, TX, USA
February 6-14, 1997

Date: Tue, 11 Feb 1997 08:07:06 -0600

We would like to let all of Benni's "travel agents" know that he arrived safely in Hurst, Texas last Thursday afternoon. He met all of our students and teachers at library check-out time Friday and today. We will look through all of Benni's exciting "baggage" during my classes on Tuesday and Thursday. Some of the classes have scheduled a visit with Benni as he travels "on wheels" around our school until Thursday, when we will send him on to Austin, Texas.

My saved e-mail with the Austin address was lost in a recent crash. Could you please send me the "snail mail" address again? Thanks!

I've asked each teacher to help me assemble a packet to send along with Benni, as we have enjoyed so much the items from California and Illinois (especially that bottle!) as well as the items he brought from Iceland! Our new friends in Iceland will have such a great time looking through what Benni has accumulated when he arrives home! I hope you will give us a final account of his travels at that time!

This is a wonderful project! I've tried for almost 2 years to interest our teachers in Kidlink activities with no success, particularly because our only internet connection is in the library! But as they have all asked how on earth I made arrangements for Benni to come to our school, it has been very easy to promote Kidlink to them, which I think is one of the best benefits of the project!

We will enjoy following Benni's travels on his way home to Iceland - please keep us posted, everyone. We will really appreciate that.

Students and staff at Shady Oaks Elementary School, Hurst, Texas (located between Dallas and Fort Worth in the metroplex region,) were thrilled to have Benni visit with us February 7-14. Our school has 480 students in grades pre-kindergarten through 6th. In grades 1-2-3-4, one section is a bilingual/Spanish class. Librarian Marcia Zorn arranged to have Benni visit with us, so he spent most of the week in the library meeting all of the students and staff members. Occasionally he got to travel "on wheels" to classroom for an extended visit!

Benni left Hurst, Texas Friday AM to travel to Casis Elementary, Austin, Texas, our state capital. I did not have time to have our photos developed to send, but I will forward them to the current host school when they are ready. We were so impressed by the newspaper articles sent from Garden Grove, California! I tried to arrange some news coverage, but was not successful. That might be something the future hosts might try to arrange, giving more advance notice to the press than I gave them.

We would like our friends in Iceland, California, and Illinois to know how much we enjoyed having Benni visit with us, and how much fun it was to explore each school's information packet. Because our students seemed to be the most interested in the Icelandic food - especially the ingredients listed for the recipes, we added a list of our students' favorite foods to the journal, which we hope you enjoy reading when Benni arrives home. Our students also loved listening to the tape of Icelandic music.

One of the items I most enjoyed was the book sent by Ms. Payne's students at Nichols Middle School in Evanston, Illinois. _Tales of a 6th Grade Something_ is a wonderful compilation which I thoroughly enjoyed reading. I would like to send our compliments on your writing skills! This work is truly an excellent creation of which you should all be very proud!

We wanted to make a videotape to send along, but again, time ran out. Maybe another school might be able to plan ahead to do that. Two of our classes made small books to add to Benni's fast-growing "treasure trove." We hope that you enjoy reading them, and learning about life in Texas.

As I was packing up the box, a student rushed into the library with a valentine for Benni. Valentine's Day seems to be the most exciting holiday celebrated at our school! (When I taught "up north" I would have said Halloween, but that celebration seems to have diminished over the years, or maybe it is just not such a big deal in the south as in the north.) Our students wanted to know if our friends in Iceland celebrate Valentine's Day? If not, let me know, and we will send you some more information about our celebration of that day.

I guess that's it from Hurst...Again we would like to extend our thanks to Mama Bear Rosa for beginning this terrific project which has provided us with so many great learning experiences. Thank you Vonnie and Frada for your clever additions to Benni's box. We loved it all, and will enjoy following Benni's travels and then hearing about his reunion with his class in Iceland. Our warmest regards to all of you! Marcia
