BENNI THE BEAR

Clinton-Mendenhall Elementary School
Garden Grove, CA, USA
January 10-31, 1997

Benni arrived in Garden Grove, California, USA on January 10, 1997. It only took him four days to arrive from Reykjavik, Iceland. Garden Grove is in Southern California about 45 miles south of Los Angeles. Garden Grove is in Orange County which was discovered by the Spaniards in 1769. Originally a rural area it now has a population of more than 150,000 and is the 17th largest city in the state of California. Garden Grove is famous for Crystal Cathedral, where Robert Schuller preaches and has a national television program. We are next to the city of Anaheim, which is home to Disneyland. Anaheim is also the home of the Angels baseball team, which has just changed their name from California Angels to the Anaheim Angels.

Cesar & Aimee Share Benni The week that Benni spent in Garden Grove at Clinton-Mendenhall Elementary school was busy. He visited in several classrooms from 1st to 5th grade. On Thursday January 16th newspaper reporters from the Los Angeles Times and the Orange County Register came to see Benni and his box of items from Iceland. The articles came out on Friday and Saturday, complete with pictures. The resource students in Mrs. Phillips' class shared Benni with the other students in the school.

Benni was in school from 8:45 AM until 2:50 PM with one recess break at 10:30 and lunch from 12:35 - 1:10. It rained 3 out of the five days so Benni had to stay inside, but on Thursday and Friday when he made his visits to classrooms it turned sunny and the temperature even got into the 70's F on Friday.

Aime Benni was in California during two important occasions. January 15th was the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, although we celebrate the holiday on January 20th. Dr. Martin Luther King was famous for helping to bring equal rights to all Americans, no matter what their race. Also on January 20th Bill Clinton was inaugurated as President of the United States, serving his second four year term in office.

Benni is now on his way to Nichols Middle School in Evanston, Illinois. We hope to read about his visits before he returns home to Iceland in May.
