Project Description:
On November 13, 2000, KIDLINK kids from around the world will write a journal, by the
hour, of their activities on that day. These journals will be sent to a new list created
on KIDPROJ just for Kidlink Day '00 called KIDDAY and may be sent to the
list in the native language of the students.
Sample Journal:
7:00 Oh... my alarm clock is so loud. It reminds me that a new day is here. I get out of
bed and get ready for the school day. I just remembered! We are doing a special activity
in Science. I think I will like today.
8:00 I am on the school bus with my friends. Would you
believe I left my lunch on the kitchen table? How could I be so dumb?
9:00 Now, it is time for art class. I *love* art! My
teacher says I have real talent. I'm making a clay pot for my mom for her birthday. I know
she'll love it. and on and on ... for the rest of the day until sleep time.
Project Purpose:
For students: By sharing activities taking place on the specified day students will be
able to see how other students around the world spend their day. They will gain new
friends from around the world. For teachers: Teachers will be able to use this activity
across many curriculum areas:
Writing - Students will jot down quick notes on the hour but will later weave these
notes into interesting journal entries.
Math - Students can analyze the data in each journal by making graphs and charts.
- What is the average time students around the world: -watch TV? - do
family chores? - awaken each morning? - go to sleep each night?
- Who spends more time watching TV? boys? girls?
- Who studies longer? Which country? Boys? Girls?
- What classroom subjects are favorites?
- Time zone activities: (an example) When Maria is doing homework in
Peru at 19:00 what is Melanie doing in New Zealand?
Science and Social Studies
- Locate each school by city and country on the map.
- Discuss latitude and longitude
- Identify the season of the year for each country. (We hope for
participants from the Northern and Southern hemispheres.)
- Discuss the social differences between countries -or- even between
cities of the same country.
