...about the project.

"The Midi Music Relay" is a collaboration project directed to students and their music teachers. The aim is to create midisongs for all on the web to enjoy. The songs are to be composed in parts. Kid #1 creates some bars of midi music, kid #2 follow up and adds some extra bars kid #3 continues and so on.

Curriculum

Your task will be to create your own original musical input to the existing midifiles or create an intro to a new song. Maximum is 30 seconds per song. You'll have to answer the 4 Q's and describe what they have done with the song, what instruments, your difficulties etc. Mail to KIDPROJ list and the midifiles to my schools website.

Teachers

Encourage your students in their efforts. Please don't try to "mainstream", even "kinky" parts are welcome. But the parts have to connect/relate in some way.

...join and get started.

  1. Go to KIDLINK and answer the four questions. (First time)
  2. Subscribe to the KIDPROJ-list. (First time)
  3. Download one or more midifiles.
  4. Import the file to your own sequencer.
  5. Start composing, 30 seconds maximum.
  6. Save file as standard midi but increase its number.
    E.g, happy2.mid becomes happy3.mid.
  7. Write an e-mail and present your work with the file.
    Send it to KIDPROJ.
    <kidproj@vm1.nodak.edu>
  8. Send the e-mail with the midifile as attachment to the moderator. <ALVIK.SKOLA@STHLMSKOLA.STOCKHOLM.SE>
  9. As soon as possible we will present your extended midifile on the website so that the next student can continue.

Guidelines

  • The maximum input is 30 seconds per song.
  • You are free to copy from the existing miditracks.
  • Don't alter anything created by another student.
  • All song are to be in General Midi.
  • A song can not exceed 3 minutes.
  • Corresponding is to be held in English.
  • Finished songs with explaining textfiles can be downloaded from the "Hot spot".
  • Please don't "snatch" themes from other musicians.
  • Although it probably won't be a problem, we can not totally guarantee that your song will be published on the website. This will not be because we forward our own musical taste it will depend on lack of server space.

...about midi

At our school we have a workshop in composing with midisequensers. Until now we have used Atari with Notator. If your workstation is PC, Mac or Atari doesn't matter, we use GM standard midifile for this project. General Midi (GM) makes it easy because the midisongs will be the same in any synth or computer. It states for instance that program change #1 means that you will hear a grand piano, pgm change #19 will sound like a rock organ etc. There are 128 different pgm changes (instruments) in GM. Also stated is that drums are recorded on channel 10. On channel 1-9 and 11-16 you can record the GM-instruments.
