Bomb Blast in Colombo...

Dear KIDFORUM Blue Print Earth People,

As you may have heard on the news, a bomb blast shook Colombo during the past week. This is an example of problems in the Earth. The LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) had suicide bombers blow the place up. These bombers are probably people with poor families. The LTTE promises their families a lot of money, only for the life of the suicide bomber. It blasted the Fort area of Colombo, the place where there are the most important buildings were. I was luckily in school, and my family and friends were safe. About 85 people died. I think it is good that the Sri Lankan government is doing all it can to get rid of the LTTE.

Blue Print Earth - Our Problems
From 6th Graders at Eydehavn school, Arendal Norway

Local problems.

At Eydehavn we have a melting plant. It produces abrasive powder and compound. The plant lets out large amounts of dust that covers the ground and dirty our environment. Sometimes, when it is really bad, we can't have our laundry hanging outside... and it's a strong smell of SIKA in the air. (SIKA is the name of the abrasive powder) There is also another problem... a lot of our parents work on the plant, and there are no other jobs for them at Eydehavn.
In the southern part of Norway, where we live the rain contains more that pure water. Acid rain is a known phenomenon. A lot of our small lakes and ponds are so polluted the fish has died out. The forest is also damaged some places. The acid rain comes from Great Britain and Germany mostly - from the big industrial areas here.

Regional problems.. (for Norway)

Traffic - cars, trucks etc. pollute the air with their exhaust and dust from the studs in the tires. In large parts of Norway people have to use studs in their tires in winter, because of all the snow. But on the highways and larger roads there are no snow - most of the time. Then the studs eat up the asphalt on the roads.. and whirl up lost of dust... We are also concerned about the Russian nuclear power plants not far from the Norwegian border. Some of them are in bad shape. There are also cities in Russia which is heavily polluted and some of this pollution threaten both Russians and Norwegian, in fact part of the whole globe.....

Global problems.

We don't want more French nuclear testing. Perhaps we all should write to the French president and tell him so!!!!! Not that he would listen, but just to let him know.... The Western world "produces" a lot of garbage and sewer. We have to get rid of this one way or the other... We are also concerned about the destruction of the rain forest. These forests is the lunges of our world. WE NEED THEM TO breathe. There are also a lot of animal species that are exterminated. Too often we hear about oil leakage or leakage of other poisonous chemicals. Some of these chemicals never disintegrate or they disintegrate slowly.... Another major problem is war and violence. Violence is also a problem in Norway, in Arendal (our town) Blind violence and vandalism pollute our environment and make a lot of people afraid. A lot of these violence are linked to drugs and alcohol. You also pollute you own body when you use drugs or smoke... Violence on video or TV can also pollute - our minds... TV is a "dangerous" medium - it affects us all........

These are the major problems facing our earth - as we see them...

THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS OF THE WORLD!

We, the pupils of the primary school Trnovo, Ljubljana, Slovenia
- a country in Europe think that the biggest problems of the world are:

1. Wars

because some leaders of the states want to take the neighbour's land.

2. Ozone hole

some years ago people thought that the gasses from the sprays and refrigerators do not damage environment.
They were wrong, ozone hole lets to pass too much UV light through the atmosphere.

3. Polluted air

in industrialised countries many factories have been built which big pollutants.
A lot of pollution comes into the air from the vehicles.

4. Polluted water

because of waste waters from industry and households are our waters more and more polluted.
In many parts of the world you can get drinking water only from the bottles. We have luck - our water is still good.
5. Violence
people don't know to live in love and peace.

We thing these are the biggest problems of the world.
We hope we will be able to slow down the tempo of the life of our parents and live better.

Identifying Earth's Problems
We think the main problems facing the earth, in order, are:

Violence

- bad influence on younger kids cause when they get older they might want to do it
My ten year old friend who lives in California has to carry a knife around

Drugs

- lot of teenagers take them - something bad might happen to them - teenagers do drugs because they think it's cool

Pollution

- could kill animals and they could become endangered

Ozone hole

- the whole earth might burn up because of over ultra rays dosage

Diseases

- some of them are made artificially and can kill more people

TV

- bad influence because it could teach kids to do violence and drugs

Oil spills

Economy

- a lot of people can lose their jobs and become poor

Drunk drivers

Extinction of animals
