POACHERS

Students at Marshview Middle School, Sacksville picked one of their words from the Alphabet Book and wrote about it:

Poachers, by Bryson Gilbert

I think that poachers are just greedy for money, animal skins, and other things involving killing animals.
Because of them, the world's animal population is going down, and more species are becoming endangered or extinct.
Some people are trying to stop the poachers, but most of them don't listen, and they keep on poaching.
My thoughts are that if the poachers poach all of the world's animals, they'll be out of a job.
Right now, I don't think there's much I can do against the poachers, but a good place to see what is made with illegally
obtained animals things is the Canadian Wildlife Service in town.
Right when you walk in, there are glass display cases with a lot of ivory artifacts, lizard and cat skins, and things related to that.
Some of the things at CWS are quite nice, but it's not that nice to see what animals had to be killed to produce these things.

Poachers, by Lori Cormier

People should have stricter laws against poaching. I think that one of the laws should be NO POACHING!
I don't think stores should buy animal furs. Poachers in the rain forest know it's against the law to kill tigers & minks.
It's not very nice to see what happens to the animals.

Poachers, by Sherri Driscoll

I think poachers are very bad, and be banned for life. They kill animals for their skins or for ivory.
If they only killed one animal at a time just for food that would be okay but poachers kill any where from 3 to 10.
If people would only be more careful to watch for poachers.

Poachers, by Karen Flemming

I think there should be more and harsher laws against poachers. For every animal a poacher kills they should get 10 years in jail.
I think that there should be more signs around nature reserves, where there is no hunting, saying

"NO HUNTING OR POACHING! YOU WILL BE CHARGED IF YOU DO!"

Let's see if there are some common elements that we can focus on.

FOOD FOR THE THOUGHTS

Hello Blue Print earth participants!

Hope your discussions are going well. Here is some "food" for thought.

Energy Search:

U.S.A. and Canada make up only 6% of the world's population and use up one third of all energy used in the world.
Fossil fuels (oil, coal, and gas) and nuclear fission are our primary source of energy.
Unfortunately we are using them one million times faster than they are being produced.
Nuclear fission, we know from the Chernobyl abd Three Mile Island disaster, is far from safe.
Explore some alternative sources of energy with your students and analyze their advantages and disadvantages
and if possible give them a rank in terms of being most effective (10) to least (1).
Students can make up charts under the following headings.

Alternative Energy Source_______Advantages_______Disadvantages_______Rank

1.__________________________________________________________________________
2.__________________________________________________________________________
3.__________________________________________________________________________
4.__________________________________________________________________________
5.__________________________________________________________________________
6.__________________________________________________________________________
7.__________________________________________________________________________
8.__________________________________________________________________________
9.__________________________________________________________________________
10._________________________________________________________________________

I shall keep sending more ideas your way. Do the activities that fit in your scheme of things and ignore the rest.
If you are trying out some neat things send them down to me and I can forward your ideas to every one.

Thanks.
All the best.

Indu

IMPACT OF INVENTIONS

These are a few things written by students in grade 6A at Marshview Middle School about Invention Impact.

RADIOS

1. A radio distracts a person when they are doing their homework because they are listening and not doing their homework.

2. The next day at school you get in trouble by the teacher for not having your homework done.

3.Then you have to yake a note home.

4. Your mother hollars at you and you get grounded.

5. Your mother might even take your radio away.

Stacey

FACTORY

1. The factory produses their product.

2.The smoke pollutes the environment and kills some of the animals and humans.

3. The factory lets out more and more smoke.

4. The smoke causes cancer for some people that live in the area.

5. The government stops the company from leting out smoke.

Andi

TV

1. You go home and you leave all your homework just to watch TV.

2. If you leave your homework you probably will get in trobble with your teacher.

3. If you get in trobble with the teacher, you'll get in big trobble with your parents.

4. And if you still don't get your homework done, your grades might go down.

5. If your grades go down, you might fail.

6. And if you fail, you'll be tought the same.

Amanda P.

CD PLAYER

1. First you have to buy a cd player then you have to buy cd's then you want to buy more and more cd's. The person that sells it to you gets richer and you get poorer.

2. With a cd player if you are doing homework it destracts you and you don't do it right then you give up on it and go watch TV.

3. Your mother askes if you are done your homework you lie and say you are done so she will leave you alone.

4. You go to shool the next day without your homework done.

5. Your teacher askes you if you are done your homework you decided last night not to lie again so you had to tell her the truth so you say "No I'm not done my homework" she would say why aren't you done your homework and you say I don't know why.

6. The teaher sends a note home saying you are not done your homework.

7. Your mother finds the note in your bookbag.

8. Your mother gronds you and takes your cd player away from you your not allowed to talk on the phone and not allowed to go anywhere until she ungrounds you. I don't think a cd player is worth all the trouble you'd get into.

By: Melanie McWhirter

TAPE PLAYER
1. You get a new tape player for your birthday and you also get a really cool tape and you listen to it all day .

2. You forget to do your homework you remember when it is to late.

3. You go to school the next day and you get a note for not having your homework finished.

4. After school you go home with the note and you show it to your mom she sees the note and first you get a lecture then you get grounded.

SOLUTION
So before you listen to your tape - DO your homework.
It's better to do your homework for half an hour than to get in trouble againschool is more important than a new tape and a new tape player.

VIRTUAL REALITY

1. People go out and buy these exspensive machines. *- )

2. People get locked into their own little worlds and forget about Earth. [:-)

3. People spend less time with their friends and don't study. -l:0)

4. The realness of virtual reality blows peoples minds making then go insane.

Evan Pooley

CARS

1. Buy it
2. Pollution from cars can kill people with lung or other problems.
2. Car accidents
3. You don't get all the exercise you need
4. If the car breaks down you have to buy new parts and then you waste money

By Lori Comier

CELLULAR TELEPHONES

1. You buy it and use it.
2. Do business on the phone.
3. People talk on them when they are driving and cause accidents
4. People can listen in on your conversations
4. You don't have any privacy
5. If you use it too much you could get a brain tumour
6. Then you could die.

By Sherri Driscoll

THE TELEPHONE

1. Children gab too much with friends
2. Children don't do their homework - don't do their chores
3. End up with bad marks - get grounded
4. Fail the grade - get suspended

by Karen

THE COMPUTER

Good Consequences:
1. You could learn a lot from computers
2. If you learned a lot, you would be smarter.
3. If you were smarter, you'd get better jobs.

Bad Consequences
1. Staring at the screen could strain your eyes
2. You might need glasses if this kept happening
3. You would probably get teased if you picked an ugly pair of glasses.

By Bryson Gilbert

You are all invited to write about the impact of different inventions.
Hopefully, you can send your mail to kidforum@vm1.nodak.edu soon. We look forward to hearing from you!
