KIDFORUM SHEDULE for 1996/97
Students will write a descriptive essay about the various water sources in their place in the world (rivers, streams, ponds, oceans, oasis etc.). Included in this essay should be how water is important to you personally, to your family, to your place in the world, to your family's way of earning a living, and to your future.
Students will do a research essay describing the importance of the water sources in recreation, industry, commerce and historical development of their place in the world. Included in this essay should be their ideas about how these developments may have affected the purity of their water sources.
Students will ask questions about how these problems affect the future of the earth and water for everyone.
Students will write persuasive letters to people who may have an influence in keeping our water resources clean for future generations.
On a particular day to be picked when we know the dates of this project, students will spend one hour picking up trash from a water source near their home. They will classify, sort, and count the items they pick up. They will share this information on KidForum. Students will use spreadsheet software, if available, to keep count of the items and create graphs. They will include their graphs and pertinent information in the persuasive letters mentioned above. Before they do this activity they will agree on a classification system based on what they predict they will find in this clean-up. New categories can be added when they actually do the pickup. How close is their prediction to the actual findings?
They will discuss the possible sources of the trash they find. Where did it come from? Is it industrial waste? Careless campers? etc.
Students will brainstorm ideas for improving the condition of their water sources.
